QuEST: Quantum Era Security Times September 2018

Welcome to the latest edition of the Quantum Era Security Times, brought to you by ID Quantique, the world leader in quantum-safe cryptography solutions.

This month, we are pleased to announce that, working with our partners SK Telecom and Nokia, we’ve successfully delivered an Optical Transport System with Quantum Key Distribution for Nokia; bringing us a step closer to wide-scale quantum communications deployments.

Next, we look at the crucial role of quantum random number generation in securing blockchains, as the technology plays a growing role in global information exchange.

We also discuss a landmark month for quantum technologies in the US, which includes the passing of the National Quantum Initiative Act and the announcement of a strategic overview for quantum information science.

We’re excited to say that you can now view the preliminary programme and book your tickets online for IDQ’s Winter School 2019!

Finally, we hope you can join us in Bejing in November for the ETSI IQC Quantum Safe Workshop, which will bring together diverse players in the quantum-safe cybersecurity to share knowledge and exchange ideas.

Best regards,

Kelly Richdale

IDQ, SK Telecom & Nokia Secure Optical Transport System Using QKD

ID Quantique, SK Telecom and Nokia announce they have successfully achieved interworking between IDQ’s Quantum Key Distribution System (QKD) and Nokia’s optical transport system on the SK Telecom network.

The encryption in Nokia’s Secure Optical Transport solution was successfully integrated with quantum keys provided by our QKD system. The combined solution was deployed on the commercial network of SK Telecom to encrypt real production data between two of SKT’s switching centres in Seoul, South Korea.

The crucial role of quantum random number generation in securing blockchains

Guest author Gilles Gravier looks at the growing role of blockchains in global information exchange and discusses the crucial role that quantum random number generation plays.

Blockchains have generated a huge interest in the last few years, sparked by the arrival in 2009 of the Bitcoin white paper. Expert Gilles Gravier (Director, Senior Advisor – Blockchain and Open Source at Wipro) discusses what blockchains are, their dependence on cryptography and the importance of good underlying entropy.

US announces strategic overview for QIS

US announces strategic overview for Quantum Information Science (QIS)

September was a landmark month for quantum technologies in the US, beginning with the House of Representatives passing the National Quantum Initiative Act.

The US certainly seems to be taking quantum technologies seriously as the Act proposes $1.2billion of investment over the next ten years. It also proposes greater interagency planning and coordination of research into quantum information science (QIS); improved collaboration between government, industry and academia; and the development of standards for QIS technology and security.
