Quantum Photonics Spotlight 2026, 28 September – 2 October, Paderborn

Quantum Photonics Spotlight 2026 is hosted by the Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems at Paderborn University, at the congress centre of the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum. The programme spans the development chain of photonic quantum technologies, from quantum theory and modelling through system design to photonic quantum applications and quantum information. Oral presentations are reserved for invited speakers, with the remaining contributions presented as posters, and the week also carries a theory autumn school and a student photonics conference as satellite events.

Detector selection is a constraint problem rather than a shopping problem. Timing jitter, detection efficiency, dark count rate, recovery time and operating wavelength trade against each other, and which combination is right depends entirely on what the experiment is measuring. Choosing badly is expensive in a way that only becomes visible months later, in the data.

The trade is structural rather than a matter of product tiers. Pushing detection efficiency generally means accepting a higher dark count rate. Reducing jitter constrains the readout electronics. Extending usable wavelength range changes the cryogenic requirement, and therefore the cost of running the instrument rather than the cost of buying it. None of those trades has a single right answer, which is why a specification sheet read without the experiment in front of you is close to useless.

A programme that runs from modelling through to applications is a good room for that kind of conversation, because the constraint usually sits at a boundary: the source sets what the detector has to resolve, and the measurement sets what counts as good enough.

Useful thing to bring: the constraints from your own setup. Wavelength, count rate, timing resolution, cryogenic budget. That gets further than a datasheet comparison.
