Why photon-number resolution, why now
Photon-number-resolved (PNR) detection is becoming central across photonic quantum technologies. But understanding what is possible, choosing the right approach and turning detector capabilities into a working application raise very different questions:
- What should you really consider when exploring PNR detection?
- How do the characteristics of your source shape what you can measure?
- What is available today, and what does it take to go from a promising measurement to a robust, scalable implementation?
Wherever you stand, exploring PNR, testing it in the lab or planning a full system, this first Masterclass starts from your experiment. Félix Bussières answers these questions live, and takes yours in the Q&A.
What can you expect?
In 45 minutes, leave with a clear way to choose, size and scale photon-number resolution for your own experiment. The session runs in three parts:
01
Know more
Decide with confidence
Know which PNR approach fits your application, before you invest.
02
Detect more
Know what is really possible
See where today’s PNR detectors truly stand, and how the numbers are proven.
03
Scale more
Plan for scale
Learn what it takes to go from one detector to a full system, with no dead end.
For live attendees only
Attendees will have access to our latest SNSPD selection guide, as well as the opportunity to translate learnings from the session into their own setup.

- Researchers and engineers in photonic quantum computing
- Teams working on quantum communication and networking
- Labs characterizing single-photon and photon-pair sources
- Sensing and imaging specialists
- Lab leads evaluating detectors, and system integrators
Speaker
Félix Bussières
Director, Product Management, Quantum Networking & Devices, IonQ
Felix Bussières is Director of Product Management for Quantum Networking Devices at IonQ, where he leads product strategy across quantum detection and networking technologies. With a background in quantum photonics and more than a decade of experience developing superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) technologies, he has played a central role in bringing SNSPD systems from research to commercial products used by quantum technology teams worldwide. His work has included the development and productization of photon-number-resolving SNSPDs, with a focus on enabling demanding applications in quantum computing, quantum networking, and photonic quantum technologies.
Moderator
Marc Nikles
VP Specialty Sales, Quantum Networking Hardware, IonQ
Marc Nikles is Vice President of Specialty Sales at IonQ, where he leads global sales of quantum networking devices. With an engineering background and a PhD in Technical Sciences, he brings more than 30 years of experience across deep-tech industries, spanning research, sales and marketing leadership, and entrepreneurship, extending to quantum technologies since 2018.
Prior to joining IonQ, Marc served as Global Marketing Director for the Energy Division at Meggitt PLC, now part of Parker Aerospace. In 2001, he co-founded Omnisens, a pioneer in long-distance fiber-optic sensing solutions for the oil and gas and energy industries. Over the following 15 years, he held successive leadership roles as General Manager, CTO, and CEO, helping transform the company from a start-up into an established small and medium-sized enterprise (SME).
Join us to challenge assumptions, explore what today’s PNR technologies can do, and discover what it takes to take PNR further.
